Introduction to Afterschool Program
The Prince Complex Afterschool Program is designed to assist middle to high school students with support to reach their educational goals. We give emphasis to offering a positive alternative for students during the hours of 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. when so many young people can get into trouble due to a lack of supervision. The program utilizes the support of experienced and qualified consultants and volunteers to assist in running the program. Experienced members of the Prince Complex staff coordinator and oversee the running of the program and provide administrative support to ensure its success. The Prince Complex offers a fun and educational way to learn important concepts to enhance a young persons life.
Program Overview
The Prince Complex program incorporates the following components:
Tutoring/Homework Help
We offer assistance with homework in the areas of English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Studies will have the opportunity to sit one-on-one with volunteers who will help them understand their assignments and assist them in getting started. Additionally, we have tutors available students with researching projects and gaining skill doing research using the computers.
Reading Comprehension Improvement
Using the eyeQ™ system we will assist students in boosting their reading comprehension. eyeQ™ is a dynamic computer program that helps students read faster and process information quickly and effectively. Students who successfully complete this program increase their reading speed by an average of 2-10 times. As a result, students enjoy reading more, learn more in less time, and have greater confidence in school. Other reported effects include higher scores on standardized tests, improved concentration and focus, increase in comprehension, as well as expanded athletic and musical ability. Along with helping you improve your reading skills we will encourage you to enjoy reading by participating in our Reading Incentive Program. Whenever you read a book you earn points towards fabulous prizes.
Etiquette and Manners
Under the leadership of Mr. Donnell Cooper of The Three Gentlemen School of Etiquette, male and female students will be taught proper table manners, etiquette, what utensils to use at a formal dinner, and so much more.
College Prep Resources
Whether students are a freshman, sophomore or junior we will assist them in getting ready for college. This includes helping to locate financial resources, such as filling out their FAFSA forms, learn the difference between merit and need based scholarships and studying for their PSAT or SATs.
Students planning to go to college will be assisted in developing a personalized plan focused on the areas of financial planning, test preparation and setting career goals. Students will be exposed to college life on three scheduled college tours to local universities.
Recreational and Arts Enrichment
Having a fun and creative outlet is important. If students love singing, dancing, illustrating, writing poetry, playing basketball or even acting, then we want to encourage them to pursue their dreams. We will allow each student the opportunity to foster what they love to do. They will be given the support they need to continue on with their dreams, whatever they happen to be.
True Maturity Program
Facilitated by Andre Foster, True Maturity is designed to introduce students to spiritual aspects which identify what it means to be truly mature. Ideal for students 12 -18, True Maturity teaches students what God’s word says about maturity. It stands in contrast to today’s concept and definition of what it means to be mature in which young people are encouraged to grow up fast and engage in behavior outside of their scope of emotional understanding. The current concept of maturity is flawed and is actually “infected by immaturity”. Finally, Mr. Foster will expose some of the myths associated with what it means to “act mature” and begin to reveal to students what is means to be mature in a positive sense.
Field Trips
We have two great trips planned during the school year to encourage career aspirations and for the students to have some fun. Students will be exposed to corporate life by visiting nearby corporations and they will be treated to a picnic day at the end of the school year to reward them for completing a successful school year.
Fun Movie Fridays
We will be showing an inspiring movie every Friday followed by a discussion about the themes and message of the movie. Popcorn, drinks and pizza will be provided.
College Tours
Three college tours have been scheduled during the school year to expose our students to a glimpse of college life. Students will be given the opportunity to learn about campus resources, meet other students and get the opportunity to ask questions about life on a college campus. Day tours will be given at historically black Texas Southern University (TSU) and the University of Houston (UH). A weekend tour and overnight trip is planned in the spring at historically black Prairie View A & M University (PV). A fourth college tour is planned to visit college row in Atlanta, Georgia during which students will have the opportunity to learn about many historically black colleges and visit civil rights monuments. This trip is rewarded to students who excel during the school year. All students have the opportunity to earn this trip and will be encouraged to do their very best to earn this trip during the school year.
LifeSkills Classes
Facilitated by Gina Stovall, LifeSkills will introduce students to many sensitive and culturally relevant life topics. Ms. Stovall will teach the students skills and provide them with knowledge to enable them to make more informed decisions about important issues affecting their lives. She will discuss issues affecting today’s youth and give students the opportunity to talk with their peers in a safe and nurturing environment.
There is so much more to the program than we can list on our website. We are propeling our youth to higher heights, come visit us and be inspired!
